You're not as smart as you think you are. Does it not occur to you that labels invest in artists to a great degree because they have something called fans. If marketing dollars alone could make millions of people connect emotionally to your music, the labels would have the market capitalization of Apple and they'd make it happen twice a week. They don't, and they can't. In the digital age even the labels are somewhat bewildered as to who is going to hit big next.

If effective marketing was enough to make a mega star, UMG would have the market capitalization of Apple. They'd do it twice a week.

I called bulshit anybody can over mute by putting too much pressure with the heel of your hand. The game doesn't count if you intentionally throw the game. NOW LEARN TO F****** PALM MUTE

i got a se electroics v2 and used eq for it, and it sound amazin. yes i know it dosent look good and also have bad handeling. in use for a streaming mic it sound great and using a mic stand that is not connectet to my desk makes it perfect for me and also it's cheap. and i am considering doing the sm7b 3d print body, for dynamics and then use my v2, so it looks cooler

If it helps the art, it's valid. There is only so much things you can do, with your hand attached to the bridge; this way you have endless possibilities!

Very nice video. I wonder what your thoughts are on Primus' Brown Album, which was similarly recorded by the band in a house. Story goes it sounds all distorted because they didn't know to keep the levels not too far in the red, but they just liked the sounds (which I think was a good choice). Just as an aside, you'll probably get closer to the pronounciation of the album title by saying "duh stile" but really end on the L sound, drop the final e, that's just there to get make the i sound closer to the ij sound in Dutch. Same with duh, just keep it really short and snappy and it will sound just about right :)

9:33 Something that slightly peeves me about this topic generally, when he says “clean” he means driven to natural breakup/harmonics via boosted signals and tube console i/o. No one was at the stu with an American practice amp thru the clean channel with no grit. That’s British tube breakup for you, it’s not truly ever “clean” when warmed up.

WOW...what an amazing vid!!! I'm out of the industry now, but back in the late 90's & early 2000's did audio post prod. on the American version of Dragon Ball Z so I'm not some schlub and I wish I could've produced the quality that you accomplished! Props...that was amazing

I think people that are saying that aren’t fingerstyle players. You can get palm muting to sound like the rubber bridge when playing with a pick up not when handpicking.

It cracked the tile. let that sink in... It cracked the tile. 😆 it is the best allaround/cheap mic for those who plan on using it for self-producing. I do generally prefer SM58 on my voice, but it depends on the song. Edgier and louder songs like SM57 better. pop filter and foam absolutely necessary. only pop filter for SM58. Cheers!

Surprised to see weirdo gatekeepers still chirping about this. Pretty much the only time 'cheating' matters is in competitions (e.g. sports). Playing an instrument is either a hobby or a means to an end (to create art). Why care if that person makes the process easier/ more enjoyable? If it's for some false sense of defending integrity, you might need to get a life.

Easier than palm muting? I couldn’t stop palm muting if I wanted to. I’ve been playing guitar for 35 years. When I started, heavy metal ruled the world, so palm muting was a requirement. I’m way too stubborn to change at this point in my life.

  • @screew708

Kind of a weak argument imo to call the sm57 more flexible when the e609 has better clarity and a more natural sound. Have you even tried an e609 on drums, bass etc? People love to praise the sm57 as if it was some extraordinary good mic and failing that rave about their reliability. I kind of understand the argument if you are a roadie but in a home studio I don't get it. It's not like the e609 is a delicate mic. It also has the benefit that you can just hang it over an amp, no stand needed. Surely that's a big benefit. Personally I own the e906 and I wouldn't ever go back to using a sm57. It just adds so much of it's own sound and imo just sounds unnatural.

Super interesting technique, can definitely see what it would bring. I'm just wondering, do you also send the effect busses into it? Like a vocal reverb bus? Or just the instrument tracks?

Screw in the bottom. Start rotating it in the loose direction until the screw grooves set into place, then begin tightening. This can prevent cross threading.

Of course ex 1 is Vibrakill. The difference is gigantic. I’ve never played one, but it goes without saying that if you can change the distance freely between dampener and the picking position you can nuance the tone in a way that’s impossible to do with palm muting. I ordered one as soon as I saw your vid. Thanks
